Verse:The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them. —Psalm 34:7, KJV
The vast expanse of lush green spread its carpet—dotted with holes. I was visiting a Caribbean island, and a former student invited me to the golf course.
Unhesitatingly, I agreed, and we soon arrived. At the office, we spotted a canine lying at its entrance. Cautiously, we proceeded to ask for Uncle, an employee who would give us a tour of the grounds on the golf cart. He asked one of the workers to do it since he was busy at the time. After I had taken my place opposite the driver, the dog, Whitie, instantly appeared.
The driver started the motor of the golf cart, and we began to move. The dog accompanied us at a slow trot. Whenever the driver accelerated the speed of the golf cart, the dog accelerated his speed as well, keeping pace with the moving cart.
The tour finished, I disembarked.
Whitie resumed his position at the entrance of the golf course grounds.
“Why don’t you let me get a picture of you sitting on the golf cart?” my friend suggested.
“OK, that would be fine,” I responded. Having said that, I climbed up into the driver’s seat to pose for the picture. Before I had settled into the seat, however, Whitie was already situated in the adjacent seat. He wanted to be part of every activity associated with his master.
What devotion! I thought. This faithful dog runs alongside his master’s golf cart. He sits beside anyone who takes his master’s seat in the cart. Being a devoted guardian of his master is this dog’s life!
Then another thought struck me: we each have a heaven-sent guardian. The angel of the Lord encamps about us who fear Him. From our birth to death, angels keep untiring vigil to protect us from dangers of which we are unaware. They travel with us wherever we go and fight off evil influences on our behalf. In short, they are “ministering spirits” (Hebrews 1:14, KJV). What a marvelous gift we have from God in the form of guardian angels! Thank You, Lord.
