Verse:I can pray this because his divine power has bestowed on us everything necessary for life and godliness through the rich knowledge of the one who called us by his own glory and excellence. —2 Peter 1:3, NET
Due to a series of unexpected events, I have spent the last two months living in a fishing village. It has been an interesting experience for me —the quintessential city girl who can’t tell a tuna from a tilapia. As with every situation in my life, God has used it to teach me something. The fishermen here live interesting lives.
They often go out to sea very early in the morning, never knowing what the night will bring. Sometimes they don’t sail out very far and catch a lot. Sometimes they go out for miles but find nothing. Sometimes they catch lots of small fish, which aren’t worth much. Occasionally, they catch something big that almost sinks their boats. They need to be strong to pull in those large catches, persistent through difficulty, and not easily discouraged by trips that bring in nothing.
They also need to be resourceful, learning to subsist on little during those stretches when they don’t catch much. A friend once asked me why Jesus chose several fishermen when selecting the twelve disciples. Now I think I see how the skills and experiences they had as fishermen would help spread the gospel.
Their strength and ability to subsist on little would have helped them on the long journeys as they brought the gospel to different areas.
Their persistence and resistance to discouragement would be necessary as they faced persecution and rejection. They had everything they needed to be workers for God. With my naturally introverted personality, it is not easy for me to chat with strangers or make friends with everyone in the room. Sometimes I feel that this puts me at a disadvantage for sharing the gospel. But actually, God has used my introverted personality to help me be a good listener and build good relationships with people, which later allows me to share Christ with them. The way God has made me helps me to be a light for Him. I think we all have everything we need right now to be workers for Christ. He will use everything we are willing to give Him to build His kingdom for His glory.
We are ready to be workers for Him if we are willing to let Him use us.
