Overflowing Grace

Women · From the book New Every Morning

Verse:

And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. —2 Corinthians 9:8, NLT

What does God’s grace look like to you? Do you picture a vessel being filled with water that represents God pouring His grace into your life? Or maybe you imagine God’s grace as an ocean —never ending and plentiful.

I see God’s grace as a river.

Water enters the river from the mountains, and the river flows to the sea. In the same way, I see God’s grace flowing into my life and from me into the lives of those I meet. God’s grace flows out of His love for us. He loves us so much that He sent Jesus to die for our sins so that we could have eternal life. God’s grace working in me changes my life, my mind, and my character. God’s grace gives me life.

Let me ask you what may seem to be a strange question.

Why is the Dead Sea in the country of Israel dead? Water flows into the sea but does not exit the sea. The Dead Sea is completely landlocked.

Nothing lives in the Dead Sea —neither plants nor creatures.

It is said to be ten times saltier than the other seas and oceans on the planet. The water that enters the Dead Sea is alive, but since no water flows from the sea, the life-giving property of the water dies. When I think of my life and God’s grace, I wonder, Do I pour that grace into the lives of others, or do I keep God’s grace to myself? If I selfishly keep God’s grace to myself, I become stagnant in my Christian growth.

How can we share God’s grace with others? Think of your daily life, and you will see how many people you meet each day who need God’s grace.

Someone says something hurtful or breaks a promise or breaks something we value. It may even be something big and life-changing, such as someone who lies about us, and as a result, we lose our job or are denied a promotion.

Every day, we meet people who need God’s grace and a touch of His love. I pray that our lives will be like a river that God’s grace flows into and then flows out of us to bless others.
