Verse:“So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.” —Matthew 10:31, NASB
Usually, a sparrow is a powerful little bird.
To me, it is a symbol of joy, simplicity, creativity, and friendship.
The sparrows quiet my soul as I sit on my chair, watching them from our porch as they feed at the bird feeder, making their little tweeting sounds.
Today, I saw a sparrow sitting by the side of our home, apparently unable to fly away. As I looked, I felt so sorry for it. Why was it just sitting there? “Get up, Nancy,” I said to myself. “Go see what is wrong with the bird.” As I walked toward it, the little bird didn’t fly away. I reached down and gently picked it up in my hand.
I feared that it would die. What could I do for this little dying bird? I took it inside and tried to give it some water, but the sparrow would have nothing to do with the water. I sat with the little bird, trying to warm it in my hand and stroked this sweet, small head and spoke softly to it. Not much later, the little sparrow took its last breath and died in my hand. It brought tears to my eyes. Oh, how I wish I could have saved that little bird! I was reminded of Matthew 10:29, “Yet not one sparrow falls to the ground without your Father’s consent” (GNT). Another Bible version says it this way: “But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it” (NLT).
If our Father in heaven can see a tiny sparrow, how can He not see us when we fall? Have you ever thought about how often the Lord must hold us in His arms? Or how many times He cries with us? How many of us have been hurt, scared, betrayed, as the world around us seems to only want to hurt us? I hope I gave a measure of comfort to the little sparrow as I sat with it, and I hope that in the future, as I notice people out in the world hurting, I will try to comfort them. I need to remember God has asked me to comfort and help others. I would like to say to you, turn to our loving God.
He’s the One who loves us unconditionally even though we are not worthy. He not only notices us but also cares enough to want to save us.
Only through His Son, Jesus, can we have eternal life.
Friends, do not fear because God not only notices —He is with us.
