Verse:The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them. —Psalm 34:7, KJV
After completing my studies at Caribbean Union College in Trinidad, West Indies, I made the decision to continue my education at Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, Maryland, United States of America. My goal was to pursue a degree in biochemistry. Reflecting on this experience, memories of my mother’s unconditional love emerge.
With a desire to provide me with everything I needed, she made sure I was prepared for my arrival in winter. Stephens and Johnson’s Department Store had a special floor dedicated to winter travelers, but my mother went beyond that.
She enlisted a tailor to craft a winter coat sewn specifically for me. She also took care of acquiring the remaining winter clothing items she knew I would need.
Amid loving advice and a flurry of activity, the day of departure arrived. Our home buzzed with family and friends offering well wishes for a safe journey.
As we packed our suitcases and loaded into the car, a somber silence permeated. But it was soon replaced by anticipation of the journey ahead.
Leaving home weighed heavily on my heart as I bid farewell to my beloved family. The announcement of my flight number and departure gate intensified the sadness. We embraced, shared kisses, and sought divine protection through our prayers.
On the plane, I yearned for the presence of my family.
Unfortunately, it was an unattainable wish.
Upon arrival at the John F. Kennedy International Airport, I caught my connecting flight and soon arrived in Washington, DC. I collected my luggage and found a taxi driver who claimed to know the location of Columbia Union College.
However, he eventually admitted he was lost.
Trying to remain calm, I silently prayed for guidance when the driver suddenly turned threatening, took all my cash, and left me stranded with my suitcases.
I was in a foreign land, lost, and penniless.
Hope came in the form of a kind stranger who noticed my distress. She had two daughters at the college and offered to take me there.
Grateful for her kindness, she safely delivered me to Halcyon Hall before disappearing. Looking back over my life, I can testify to the faithfulness of God.
What a wonderful God we serve!
